Online security watchers are warning a new app on Twitter claiming to track stalkers is a hoax.

All day, Twitter users have been bombarded with messages for a link to a new application, but it turns out the messages are really designed to steal your Twitter usernames and passwords.

According to the security vendor Sophos, the StalkTrak app promises to reveal all your Twitter stalkers. Instead, cyber criminals behind the fake app will "be able to use your account to read your private messages, send messages (perhaps spam-related or containing malicious links) to your followers," Sophos wrote.

The phishing scam has the potential to cause victims serious problems if they make the mistake of reusing their Twitter passwords elsewhere, such as on banking or webmail sites. Sophos is warning users if they come across these messages, do not click on attached links.
