The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released its first mobile app designed to help parents notify authorities in the unlikely event their child goes missing. Currently, the FBI app is only available for the iPhone, but also works on the iPad and iTouch.

Here is how it works. Parents record information about the child in the app and use the app to take a photo of the child. Parents must fill out various tabs including the child's name, nicknames, address, date of birth, ethnicity, and several fields for "identifying characteristics" information.

The information and image is then stored in the phone. If there is an emergency, there is a send button and the information can be emailed to the FBI. The FBI says the first thing parents should do if their child goes missing is call local authorities. The app also has a button for parents to call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

The FBI says no information about you or your child will be collected or stored by the FBI or iTunes.
