Are you a social network guru willing to work for the government? The Pentagon wants you! In its efforts to combat cyberterrorism, the U.S. Department of Defense needs social media savvy individuals to search social media sites and identify where a major event like the Arab revolutions might happen next.

In hopes of using social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as a resource and a weapon to combat future conflicts in the world, the Pentagon’s research and development agency, The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is offering $42 million to fund research to monitor social media sites.

The Pentagon feels it needs to be prepared because history has shown that technologies such as the telegraph, radio and telephone have changed the nature of warfare. With the use of social media, the Pentagon is hoping to utilize social networks if future conflicts occur.

Just this year, social media played huge roles in the toppling of governments in Egypt and Tunisia. DARPA wants to be able to detect and track the spread of any plans or ideas quickly and on an extensive scale.

Interested individuals who consider themselves social media savvy need to apply as soon as possible because preliminary proposals are due soon. For more information please visit www.darpa.mil.
