A big chunk of my disposable time (like disposable income, but just with time) has been spent playing some of my favorite games from back in the day. I stumbled upon this website called Good Old Games, which sells classic PC games from around a decade ago that are either hard to find or are no longer being made.

The thing about old PC games is that they were designed for whatever hardware was current during that time. So, a game that came out in 1991, was basically meant to be played on a machine for around that time. Fast-forward to the present and attempt to play that same game and you'll run into a ton of issues. There's a lot of techno-babble (much of which I have a hard time wrapping my pea-brain around), but the gist of it from what I understand, is that older PC games are sometimes incompatible with newer PCs. So your favorite game from 1991 may not work on your brand-spanking new computer without some tweaks and hacks.

The cool thing about Good Old Games, is that they tweak and modify the games for you, to make them compatible with current PCs. While their tweaks work for the most part, don't be surprised if some minor issues come up, here and there. For example, my current-time waster is a classic game called Planescape: Torment, an RPG based on the DnD campaign setting of Planescape. When my characters travel throughout the world, they have a tendency to always walk-backwards.

Now, if this was a game that came out this year and I purchased at full-price, I would've been shocked and upset for such a glaring problem. However, I understand that this was a game that came out in 1999, over 10 years ago, so there's bound to be some problems in the translation. The game is still a blast to play and minor problems like these can be forgiven, considering that this great game was not available for play for nearly a decade. I had always read great reviews of this game and was always saddened by the thought that I would never get to experience this game. Then I found Good Old Games and now I have access to a bunch of great old school PC games from yesteryear, some games that I had played, others I haven't, but have always wanted to play.

The library of games for Good Old Games is a decent size, with great titles spanning a wide-range of years. Their library is constantly growing however, so check back every so often to see what gems are available. Since these are basically refurbished games, for lack of a better description, the games are seriously cheap. Like single-digit cheap. A quick scan shows no game over $9.99.

Check out Good Old Games out at GOG.COM to experience some of the great games that have influenced the PC gaming world of today. Come with an open-mind however, since many of these games are over a decade old. For some people, like myself, this a veritable treasure-trove of nostalgic memories and the golden years of PC gaming.
