Many patients are very anxious when referred for an MRI scan due to the confining MRI scanner and loud repetitive knocking noise. Patients must hold still on average for about 30 minutes. Claustrophobic patients will often require sedation. In extreme cases, some patients may forgo an MRI scan and have a less effective test as they cannot tolerate the MRI even with sedation. This amounts to about 20 percent of all patients.
Now, Kapi‘olani Medical Center at Pali Momi offers all patients, a comfortable, entertaining MRI experience. MRI Cinemavision Virtual Headset allows patients to enjoy their favorite TV morning news show or movie during the scan. Patients feel like they’re watching a 60” TV in their living room. During the scan, when the MRI tech speaks with the patients, they can see the tech through the headset and find it reassuring.
As a result of this innovative technology, most patients no longer require sedation and we can even obtain better scans as patients are less likely to move resulting in higher quality images. It’s helping doctors make the most accurate diagnosis.
