SBA Journalist of the Year — 2005
In 2005, during National Small Business Week, The SBA Journalist of the Year award was presented to Technology News Bytes from the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) and The Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii for significant contributions as an advocate on behalf of small business.
Technology News Bytes beat out hundreds of other 2005 Small Business Journalist of the Year nominees throughout the nation. Nominees in this category are journalists who represent television, radio, electronic, or print media.
The SBA awards are prestigious governmental awards that recognize recipients involved in small business (owners and employees, individuals or organizations) at the State (all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U. S. Virgin Islands, and Guam), District (multi-district states), and National levels. The National Small Business awards are selected from the State level winners.
The SBA awards are comprised of many different sub-categories, such as Small Business Person of the Year Award, the Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence, and the Small Business Leaders of the Year Award.
The United States Small Business Administration was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Small Business Act of July 30, 1953. The SBA’s function was to aid, counsel, assist and protect the interests of small business concerns, to preserve free competitive enterprise, and to maintain and strengthen our nation’s overall economy.
Since 1958, the SBA’s venture capital program has invested more than $30 billion in financing the growth of small businesses. The SBA also provides loans to natural disaster victims and specialized advice and assistance in international trade. Just last year, the SBA provided more than $12.3 billion in loans to small businesses, with more than $1 billion made available for disaster loans.
The SBA encourages business participation by diverse groups, including women and minorities, such as in the minority small business program, micro loans, and language informational materials published in Spanish.
